The Site Assistant

Some pages on this site offer a chat assistant. It is an AI, and it says so when you open it. Using it is optional.

When you use the assistant, we save the conversation. That includes the messages you type, the assistant's replies, the page you were on when you started, and the address of the page that sent you to our site. We do not store your IP address with the conversation. We keep a scrambled identifier in its place, which lets us limit abuse without knowing who you are.

If you ask the assistant to email you a summary, we collect the email address you give us. We use it to send the summary, and we add you to our monthly email. Every email has an unsubscribe link, and the chat tells you this before you submit your address.

We use saved conversations to understand what business owners are asking, to improve the assistant, and to improve this site. We do not sell them.

We delete each saved conversation one year after it takes place. If you asked for a summary, the email address you gave us stays in our contact records under the rest of this policy.

The assistant runs on services from outside providers. One provides the AI model that writes the replies, one stores the conversations, and one sends the summary email and keeps the contact record. They process this information on our behalf. The provider of the AI model does not use these conversations to train its models.

Please do not share confidential or sensitive information in the chat. If you would like a conversation deleted sooner, contact us using the information below and we will remove it.
